Treble's ALBUM OF THE WEEK | News

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Morrissey

'Years of Refusal' - 2009

Attack! - Lost Highway

It's hard to believe now that there was a time when I wasn't looking forward to each and every Morrissey album release. Somewhere between Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted, I just lost interest. I still ended up getting them, I just wasn't nearly as energized by his music that I was by other, more guitar driven bands of the time, like Jawbox and Quicksand. Nor was I personally connecting with his dourness as I had been in his days with the Smiths and his first solo records. I remember having a trilateral discussion with my brother and a friend who posed the question, "Who has a better voice, Bernard Sumner or Morrissey?" To this day, I can't even tell you why I even pondered the question. As much as I love New Order, and even Electronic, there are times when, especially in a live setting, Bernard Sumner's voice gives me fits. Morrissey's gifts have always been his vocal prowess and lyrical ability. The question should have been a no-brainer, but what haunts me to this day is that I have no recollection of how I answered. Beside Morrissey himself, the one thing that these two memories have in common is that they were both solved, once and for all, by You Are the Quarry, the Mozzer's magnificent comeback to the spotlight after seven years on the periphery.

That particular album, and its successor, Ringleader of the Tormentors, helped us all realize that Morrissey was not gone, by any means, and that he was still a magnificent artist that could not be pigeonholed by era. Those of us, who have considered ourselves fans of Steven Patrick, have lived and breathed with the emotive crooner for at least a quarter century, but we've never lived and breathed as aggressively as with his latest, Years of Refusal. On this album, which seemed interminably delayed due to the sad loss of producer Jerry Finn and the lack of an American label (Lost Highway to the rescue! I'm sure that one caused a few head scratches), Morrissey has seemingly found his most potent backing band of collaborators yet. Matt Walker (Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage) and Solomon Walker (no evidence as to any relation) provide some of the most electrifying rhythm lines in the singer's long career, while the dual guitar assault of Jesse Tobias (who nerds like myself will recognize as one of the co-writers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's musical episode, "Once More with Feeling") and Boz Boorer is explosive at the very least. Guitarists continue to be the secret weapons behind Morrissey's dramatic swagger. From his early days with Billy Duffy, to his legendary collaboration with Johnny Marr, and beyond, guitarists have been the Mozzer's musical BFF's. (Jeff Beck even makes a guest appearance on the track, "Black Cloud.") Years of Refusal is no different, with Tobias, Boorer, and Alain Whyte co-writing all of the songs on the album. Each bring their own particular flavor to the mix, with Whyte providing more of the classic Morrissey sound, Boorer more of a proto-punk / rockabilly feel, like a less stoic Richard Hawley, and Tobias a hard-edged pop sensibility. Ultimately, the sum of these parts turns out to be greater than any one individual contribution. Plus, without looking at the liner notes, you'd be hard pressed to guess who penned each song. This is evident with the opening crunch of lead track "Something is Squeezing My Skull," a hard charging number that finds Morrissey matching the music in energy and fire. In fact, I can think of few other times when his voice rises at the end of a line as it does during the first chorus. His repeated, rapid-fire delivery of "don't gimmie anymore" is still further evidence of a continued intensity since his 2004 comeback.

But again, the highlight of any Morrissey record is his phenomenal voice. Particular highlights that showcase his still powerhouse vocal prowess include "Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed," "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" and the Morricone flavored "When Last I Spoke to Carol." The latter's Spanish horns and whistling are a welcome addition to the repertoire, amazingly fitting in perfectly with the band's style. Another surprise on Years of Refusal is the dramatic "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore." Yes, its lyrics are purely classic Morrissey, but the music sounds mined from the extraordinarily grandiose heyday of U2, with the Moz doing his best Bono, stretching his vocals farther than ever before. The song is breathtaking, and sure to be a fan favorite for years to come.

Toward the end of the album, Morrissey becomes seemingly self-deprecating (what a shocker), with the song, "You Were Good In Your Time." The irony here is that Morrissey is far from `washed up.' To answer most readers' questions at this point, yes, Years of Refusal is Morrissey's best record since insert your own personal favorite Morrissey album here. Eventually, Morrissey will vanish from the stage, but if this latest album is any indication, he sure hasn't lost steam yet, in fact, he's only improved. With lyrics such as "you're gonna miss me when I'm gone" (off earlier single, "All You Need is Me" and "you will never see the one you love again" (off "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell"), one might worry that our hero is planning on exiting stage left. But, since most of Morrissey's songs read like suicide notes, one can summarily dismiss any hidden or even overt subtext. That aside, we can lay back and enjoy what is arguably one of the Mozzer's best albums to date. On the back cover (I'm not even touching that front cover), under the producer credit and recording location, the words "Play Very Loud" are printed. You best believe it.

Similar Albums:

Richard Hawley- Lady's Bridge

Morrissey- Vauxhall & I

Jarvis Cocker- Jarvis

The beauty of present-day Morrissey is that his worldview has not changed since he was a teenager back in ’70s Manchester. Over the course of his twenty-plus years in the music business, Morrissey’s song — his clever and gloomy song — has remained the same.

When he was twenty, Morrissey and his literate lyrics were steeped in a world-weary wisdom that belonged to someone older — someone who had been kicked around for a bunch of decades. Back then, he was ahead of his time. Now he is older, a bunch of decades have passed, and looking out from the cover of Years of Refusal, with patches of gray along his temples and someone’s baby clutched in an arm, he finally seems to have reached the age of enlightenment that he’s been singing about all these years…which actually must be a bit of a cruel joke for him. Morrissey’s point, all along, has been that there is no such thing as enlightenment, that the only enlightened part of existence comes in the form of a soul-mate, and once they leave you, you’re screwed and back to the lonely and juvenile confusion of square one.

If you were expecting progress in the existing-in-this-terrible-world department, then don’t hold your breath; Morrissey’s quest for enlightenment on his latest release is just as unclear as it has always been. However, there is one thing that Years of Refusal makes abundantly clear: those searing and feisty vocals have always been at their best when backed by equally searing and feisty instrumentals. From the opening track — the driving drums and guitar attack of “Something is Squeezing my Skull” — it’s obvious that Years of Refusal is going to be an album full of Morrissey surrendering to the kind of musical accompaniment that make his prophetic lyrics pop and shock the way they should.

Aside from the slight mariachi infusion during “When Last I Spoke To Carol,” Years of Refusaldoes not find Morrissey veering much from the straightforward alternative pop/rock that he’s always done. He does not cover new musical ground, and Years of Refusal is a reminder as to why that is a good thing. Morrissey does not need to waste his time making clever attempts at new musical ground. His lyrics and ideas have always been clever enough to do it for him.

Years of Refusal is classic Moz, and thus a song-by-song analysis of the album is pointless. For those who don’t know what classic Moz means, here’s a definition: when that lonesome, ageless tenor wails things like “When I die I want to go to hell,” or “Surely the hand contains a knife,” you’ll feel torn between chuckling to yourself and curling up and crying like you want to die, but either way, you’ll keep listening.

Morrissey is launching the US leg of his world tour at the end of February and is headlining this year’s Coachella.

It may have seemed like a case of seriously strange bedfellows to pair Mozzer with producer Jerry Finn, a man known best for as a knob-twiddler for punk-poppers like Blink-182, Green Day, and Sum 41, but the end result was not only a remarkable return to form but, indeed, the best thing Morrissey had released since 1992’s Your Arsenal. Sadly, it’s for the last time, as the producer succumbed to the effects of a massive cerebral hemorrhage not long after completing his work on the project, but at least it can be said that he went out on a strong note.

Years of Refusal is the album that should have followed You Are the Quarry. After messing about with songs that rocked more than they popped and trying to get epic but only ending up bloated, Finn has succeeded in getting Morrissey back on track and steered him into a collection consisting almost entirely of perfect-world hit singles. First up: "Something Is Squeezing My Skull," co-written by longtime band member Alan Whyte – who, ironically, doesn’t actually perform on the album – and featuring both a soaring chorus and a finale where drummer Matt Walker sounds like he’s giving it his best Animal impression. (Seriously, it’s a total "beat drums" moment.) Whyte is also the co-writer of "When I Last Spoke to Carol," which sounds like someone – either he or Morrissey – had been listening to quite a lot of Lee Hazlewood immediately prior to composition. Dig those mariachi horns! The brass returns to kick ass later in the album on "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell," which features one of those lyrics that is inimitably Morrissey:

"And the smiling children tell you that you smell
Well, just look at me, a savage beast, I’ve got nothing to sell
And when I die I want to go to hell"

It’s fair to say that the strongest portion of Years of Refusal is the first two-thirds of the record, where every song comes in at under the four-minute mark and it’s all very catchy and easily-digestible alt-rock. "I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris" is very much a classic Morrissey single, sounding like it could’ve come from the midst of his solo era on Sire, Jeff Beck contributes guest guitar to the slightly unsettling but very awesome "Black Cloud," and the lyrics of "All You Need Is Me" play like a less-threatening sequel to "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get." ("You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone," Morrissey assures us.) Selecting the longest four tracks to close the record is a masterstroke of sequencing, since most anyone will have been sufficiently impressed by the songs which have preceded them to accept a couple of five-minute numbers, though "You Were Good In Your Time" spends too long being too languid for its own good.

Still, if there’s one thing that Years of Refusal proves, it’s that Finn had the ability to get Morrissey to imbue his songs with good-humored swagger without wrapping them in ego. This shouldn’t be taken to suggest that Moz hasn’t continued to experience personal growth on his own. After all, once upon a time, it would’ve been unimaginable for the man to close an album with a song entitled "I’m OK By Myself." (It’s also particularly notable on this track just how strong his voice remains even 25 years on from the first Smiths album.) With this sentiment out there for all to hear, let us hope that Morrissey can take the tricks he learned under Finn’s tutelage and continue to follow the same path a bit better whenever he finds his way back to the studio again.

'Years of Refusal' [CD/DVD]
Morrissey

Review

By: Stephen Thomas Erlewine

All the heavy lifting of his comeback finished, Morrissey settles into a robust middle age on Years of Refusal, an evocation of his thick Your Arsenal sound that doesn't feel like a conscious re-creation -- rather, this just is who Moz is, an old brawler who refuses to hang up his gloves or settle a grudge. The sound remains the same but the songs don't quite: although this is also produced by Jerry Finn, this isn't the deliberate revival of You Are the Quarry, all sharp edges and metallic sheen, the better to rope in the young emo kids who came of age after Maladjusted, nor is it the gentle prog pretensions of the Tony Visconti-produced Ringleader of the Tormentors. Years of Refusal is comfortable in its settled nature, in its roaring guitars and swaying melodies, sometimes ratcheting up the aggression -- especially so on the tight, compacted opener, "Something Is Squeezing My Skull" -- but often just riding along, assured in its might and wit, never feeling the need to change for change's sake. Such conservatism has long been part of Morrissey's makeup -- when everybody pined for a synthesized future in the Thatcher/Reagan years, he sought refuge in the past -- and now that he has people paying attention again, he's fine with not changing the sound and writing songs about his happy middle-aged miserablism, a miserablism that increasingly feels like a device to fuel Morrissey's satire. Morrissey has never been reluctant to turn his wit upon himself but he relishes sending up his moping persona and advancing age here, resulting in some excellent quips and asides, along with some nicely honed ballads like "You Were Good in Your Time." Along with "That's How People Grow Up," where the perennially broken-hearted Moz acknowledges that there are worse things in life than never being someone's sweetie, this song is the best example of how Morrissey is feeling his years -- contrary to the implications within the album's title, he's not fretting about his age but throwing his arms around it, giving Years of Refusal a nicely comfortable feel that's welcome after the slightly strident overtones of its predecessors. Nothing here is surprising, of course, but Years of Refusal is a full-bodied, full-blooded album that also happens to be fully realized -- even if it is on a rather modest scale. But time's cruel toll just validates Morrissey's morbid drama-queen spiels - to paraphrase a lyric from his old band the Smiths, he has earned it, baby. Of course, he'd be insufferable if he wasn't always so hilarious. His ninth album, Years of Refusal, stares down existential dread with muscular glam-rock riffs, cheesy synths, heroic mariachi flourishes and a whole lot of punch lines. "No true friends in modern life," Morrissey declaims on the emo opener, then counts off a list of mood-control drugs. "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" goes for global branding, while the Spanish-tinged "You Were Good in Your Time" conjures a washed-up idol. Thankfully, it ain't autobiography yet.

Some people have argued that this cover is “ridiculous,” while others don’t have a clue as to the baby’s significance.

Perhaps, people have seemed to forget that this is Morrissey, we’re talking about. Part of his appeal is the fact that his fans feel as though they know everything about their blue-eyed deity, yet in reality, all they know is an artfully-crafted persona. With this in mind, Years of Refusal proves to be a succinct, creative, witty example of Morrissey’s musical longevity and fascinating allure.

Previous efforts, such as Ringleader of the Tormented and his slew of Greatest Hits albums have generally left most fans wondering if Moz has lost a hold on his lyrical crown. However, with Years of Refusal, Morrissey proves that he forever deserves his title as one of the cleverest, if not best, figure of the pop and alternative scene. Yes, some of the usual topics are explored, such as loneliness, isolation, depression, alienation and forgiveness. Yet this album is not the leftovers of You Are the Quarry or even Tormented.

Although the album is not a total reinvention of the typical Morrissey musical style, it still maintains a strong level of refreshing ingenuity that is almost unexpected. Today, with the recent flood of “emo” music and “pop-punk” bands, listeners are used to the musical exploration of teenage angst, the underside of being a wallflower and the primal urge to rebel. Although Years of Refusal may appeal to the teenage black sheep, the music stands above the rest due to spot-on guitar arrangements, sharp lyrics, a surge of unabashed self-confidence and Morrissey’s vocal style.

The opening song, “Something Is Squeezing My Skull,” has the vivacity and latent ferocity of a track from Viva Hate or Your Arsenal. Morrissey laments:

“Oh, something is squeezing my skull
Something I can barely describe
There is no hope in modern life”

The song is a smart and realistic reflection of someone battling with a mental illness, most likely depression, and the constant tug-of-war between struggling with the heaviness of one’s emotions and the conflicting desire to avoid prescription medications. Later on, he croons:

“Diazepam as valium
Temazepam
Lithium
HRT
ECT
How long must I stay on this stuff?
Don't give me any more
Don't give me any more”

The song is full of the chaotic and arresting energy that hums throughout the rest of the album. The second track, “Mama Lay Softly On The Riverbed,” relies on the steady backbone of the drums, which takes on a rhythm akin to a battle- or in this case, funeral- march. Imagery and metaphor abound in this song, as the frantic spirit of the song and Morrissey’s haunting voice keep sentiment from crossing the line of ironic to trite.

“Mama, why did you do it?
Mama, who drove you to it?
Was it the pigs in grey suits
Persecuting you?
Uncivil servants unconcerned
That’s how they frightened you
With no care for how they tortured you
Life is nothing much to lose
It's just so lonely here without you”

Perhaps Morrissey never defines the unspoken tragedy of the mother. However, the implications speak louder than the concrete. There’s something undeniably bittersweet about the track, as it closes with the culmination of the percussion, guitar and Morrissey’s vow to reunite with her.

The third and fourth tracks, “Black Cloud,” and “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris,” respectively, are threaded with that particular touch of nihilism and cynicism that cringe at the mere mention of sympathy. Despite the mentions of alienation and detachment that fuel both songs, Morrissey is not asking for a savior.

With an air of assured acceptance, Morrissey states:

“In the absence of your love
And in the absence of human touch
I have decided
I'm throwing my arms around
All of Paris because
Only stone and steel accept my love”

His voice attempts to reach operatic levels, as he willingly exchanges humanity for the lifeless affection of The City of Lights.

Although Morrissey seems to have directly addressed his fans in previous songs, (“Will Never Marry”), “All You Need Is Me,” tackles the subjects of both fan adoration and fanatical criticism with equal parts fascination and mockery.

“You hiss and groan and you constantly moan
But you don't ever go away
And that's because all you need is me
You don't like me but you love me
Either way, you're wrong
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone”

The song provides an immediate contrast to “Throwing My Arms Around Paris,” the previous track. Driven by the consistency of the bass, Morrissey’s voice is a perfect fit for the nature and the mood of the song, as he flexes his vocal prowess with frequent vibratos.

In direct contrast to the controlled chaos of the opening track, “I’m OK By Myself,” is a proclamation of self-reliance and independence. Much in accordance with the stately reserve emitting from the album’s cover, “I’m OK By Myself,” can be taken as a personal confession from Moz himself. He reflects:

“Could this be an arm around my waist?
Well, surely the hand contains a knife
It’s been so all of my life
Why change now?
It hasn't!
Now this might surprise you, but
I find I'm OK by myself
And I don't need you
Or your morality to save me”

Packed with the sneering defiance of classic punk rock, Morrissey battles with the drums and guitar, chanting NO over and over again, as though the louder he wails, the truer and concrete his declaration. It’s the perfect ending for a musician that cloaks himself with the safety of mystery, a man that breathes life into the very pages of his personal journal, yet continues to keep his adoring public at an arm’s length.

Album Review" class="fullsize">

'Years of Refusal'
A-

By Keith Phipps - February 17, 2009

Morrissey’s current comeback began with 2004’s You Are The Quarry—it found him sounding more engaged than he had in years, and it reminded longtime fans why their old obsession mattered in the first place. But Morrissey’s latest, Years Of Refusal, makes it sound like he’s only been meeting fans halfway. Not since 1992’s Your Arsenal has he combined barbed wit and fast-moving, backward-glancing guitar rock so piercingly.

Morrissey infamously included a promise to cut the throat of an enemy (most likely his former drummer in The Smiths, Mike Joyce) on his worst album, 1997’s Maladjusted. Since then, he’s rediscovered how to take his satisfaction with words. He gained fame spinning laments about the prospect of never finding love, but his songs now sound informed by an anger-stirring heartbreak. Songs like “It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore,” “Sorry Doesn’t Help,” and “Black Cloud” turn the pain of rejection and disappointment into a damaging crackle.

But if there’s an underlying theme to Years Of Refusal, it’s the need to age gracefully, or at least move away from the places that hurt. It’s evident in titles like “I’m Okay By Myself,” but really felt in the passion Morrissey brings to songs like “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” (“…because only stone and steel accept my love”) and “That’s How People Grow Up.” His words get fine showcases from veteran collaborators Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte, newer-to-the-fold Jesse Tobias, and producer Jerry Finn, whose death shortly after Refusal’s completion casts an additional pall over an album already deeply concerned with death. “Time grips you, sliming, in its spell,” Morrissey sings elsewhere, but for now, he sounds vital, alive, and like he’s finding mid-life as rich in purposeful misery as any other age.

It's sort of a dismissive stance, and it has less to do with the relative quality of those now-revered albums as it does with an assumption that even well-executed comebacks don't tend to produce classics. And sure, Morrissey will never be as exciting as he was in the late '80s and early '90s, but with 2004's You Are the Quarry, 2005's better-than-average live album Live at Earls Court, 2006's Ringleader of the Tormentors, and now Years of Refusal, Morrissey has put out four solid releases in five years. Song for song, he has never been this consistently good, except maybe in the best days of the Smiths.

The high quality of Morrissey's recent output, in comparison to even his celebrated early-'90s releases, ultimately comes down to the attentive composition and a willingness to employ a wider array of instrumental contexts than for Morrissey's singing. For all their strengths, Vauxhall and Arsenal could slip into sameness. The focus was never supposed to be on the players behind the man on those records, but his band's work isn't simply reduced to sonic backdrops here. "When Last I Spoke to Carol" rides a galloping mariachi stomp, while "Mama Lay Softly On the Riverbed" and "You Were Good in Your Time" both use synths and strings, respectively, to creepy atmospheric effect. One of Morrissey's central dilemma's has always been how to write interesting songs about being bored and disaffected, and he now seems increasingly willing to make composition part of that equation.

Those welcome developments aside, the best tracks on Years of Refusal are distinguished by what has always made for standout Morrissey songs: a powerful vocal performance and mordantly quotable lyrics. On the first track "Someone Is Squeezing My Skull," Morrissey conveys new-millennium malaise and catalogues brand-name anti-depressants, but does so through a surging, energetic vocal performance that's playfully jumpy in both scale and tempo. It's an anti-anthem as good as any he's ever recorded, in part because his singing comes through with a richness and vitality that even the better songs on Quarry and Tormentors lacked. Certainly, his range has diminished since his youth, but he sounds truly revitalized here, and he confidently delivers a gorgeous chorus on the single "Throwing My Arms Around Paris" that recalls vintage Smiths singles like "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side."

As the album proceeds, Morrissey simply sounds like a superior version of the singer he's always been. He doesn't take many chances, which is ultimately the album's biggest flaw. There are almost no bad songs on the album, but only a handful of truly memorable ones. When he does push himself as a songwriter, as on the disarmingly maudlin "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore," the results are stunning. He berates the listener during the song's sinister climax: "Did you really think we meant all those syrupy sentimental things that we said?" That the song manages to be both petty and emotionally riveting is a testament to Morrissey's expressiveness. Songs like that make it clear that the reincarnated Morrissey has lost none of his articulate bitterness. Older, wiser, and as caustic as he's ever been, he is in an enviable position as a performer: A decade and a half since he was Top of the Pops, his latest songs rival any of his past material in workmanlike consistency and creativity.

His career and his iconic statushave affirmed that it’s been an overwhelmingly successful endeavor. Especiallyin his native UK, the music press continues to crane its neck in his directionwith regularity, like a jock keeping tabs on the misfit kid in the corner whoalways aces his science project. When he became rich and famous and moved toSouthern California, Morrissey was accused of hypocrisy and criminalpretension. How could someone in that position possiblyidentify with people who didn’t fit in, much less maintain he was oneof those people. But those accusations missed the point. Morrissey in LA isMorrissey in Manchester is Morrissey in Rome. Maybe the reason his outsideridentity has endured is also the simplest and least impeachable one. It’s genuine.

Like most outsiders, Morrissey ishyper-aware of what attention the worlddoes pay to him. In otherwords, he’s not above caring about things like chart positions and recordsales. You Are the Quarry, his 2004 comeback, became hiscareer-to-date bestseller. Many factors conspired to produce this success. Asignificant one was Jerry Finn’s slick, glossy, adult-alternative-friendlyproduction. Finn had made his name producing slick, glossy pop-punk albums forMxPx and Blink 182. He was instrumental in restoring Morrissey’s commercialcredibility at a time when Morrissey was in dire need of it. For the follow-up,2006’s Ringleader of the Tormentors, Morrissey tapped veteran TonyVisconti to produce, making good on a long-mooted partnership. The albumreceived pretty good reviews and sold respectably, but was nowhere near thesmash You Are the Quarry had been.

So, Morrissey didn’t hesitate to turnback to Finn for Years of Refusal. Visconti’s lush, spaciousorchestrations are out, replaced by Finn’s more radio-friendly sheen. Butthere’s a difference this time. For someone who makes a point of being soemotionally sensitive, Morrissey is obsessed with classic, old-school masculinetoughness. You don’t have to look any further than the fixations on criminals, gangsters, and boxing that can be traced throughout his career. On Yearsof Refusal, this obsession plays out in the music as well as the picturesleeves and the lyrics.

Years of Refusal is Morrissey’s leanest, meanest, loudest record since1992’s Your Arsenal. The adult-alternative bit is pretty much gone, replaced by a “lads-only night in the studio” vibe. Since Your Arsenal,Moz’s band, rotating membership and all, have always looked like hoods. Here, they play like hoods, too, cranking up the volume and lettingloose with explosive guitars, rattling bass, and earth-shattering drums. WithMoz within a hair’s breadth of 50, the unspoken premise is that age can beovercome with pure bombast. And on Years of Refusal‘s incredibleopening salvo, the execution works better than it has any right to.

By now you might well have read about“Something is Squeezing My Skull”. It packs a breathless, power-guitar riff, irresistible chorus, and thermal meltdown of an ending, in which Morrissey isurged on by guitarist Boz Boorer’s shouts, into two minutes. And it’s not shorton Morrissey’s sharp-as-ever wit, either. “I’m doing very well / I can blockout the present and the past now”, he claims, proceeding to rattle off a list ofprescription drugs that help him do so. This is followed by the in-your-facerhythmic punch of “Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed” and the devilishglam/rockabilly of “Black Cloud”, which puts a twist on the reflexive bass rifffrom Your Arsenal track “Tomorrow” and features some mean andmoody guitar from… Jeff Beck? Yes, Jeff Beck!

On paper, it might well soundhorrible, an aging icon grasping for a mojo that just isn’t there any more.Even when you first hear these tracks, you can’t help but think of Morrisseyfronting Social Distortion, and all the wrongness that implies. But then theevidence sinks in. The songs, mostly co-penned by mainstays Boorer and AlainWhyte, are mostly wicked good, the lyrics are intriguing enough, andvocally, Moz is up to the task. In fact, throughout Years of Refusal,he sounds younger than he has in at least a decade. With the band pushing himrather than simply covering his back, he sounds invigorated, stretching, twisting, and doing that wordless yodeling thing more convincingly than he hassince his Smiths days.

Not all of Years of Refusal isbombast, either. The band show they can complement Morrissey’s morecontemplative material as well. Single “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” is atypical latter-day midtempo Morrissey number, elegant and unfussy, only it’sbuoyed by exemplary musical and vocal melodies. “You Were Good in Your Time”,the only one of the dozen tracks here that stretches beyond a few minutes, isso languid, the synth-strings so glacial, it’s very nearly trip-hop.

“It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore”harnesses the best of both worlds, delicate, emotionally naked verses harshlyinterrupted by a pounding, anthemic chorus. While the title may suggestself-parody, Morrissey pulls it off, shattering the contrivance of a pleasantcelebration with… real love? When he sings, “All the gifts that they gave can’tcompare in any way / to the love I am now giving to you / right here right nowon the floor,” it certainly sounds that way. Or is the reference to somethingthat “cannot be given / so it must be taken” far darker? These questions makethe track affecting rather than just a good tune. Morrissey seems to sense it,too, emoting wordlessly, sincerely, with unprecedented passion. As a bonus, even rockers like “Mother Lay Softly on the Riverbed” and “Black Cloud” havemoments of unexpected beauty.

It’s debatable whether any ofMorrissey’s preceding eight studio albums can rightly be considered a classicfrom start to finish. Alas, to ask that of Years of Refusal wouldbe too much. The decision to include the two singles from 2008’s GreatestHits, especially the undistinguished “That’s How People Grow Up”, isquestionable. “When Last I Spoke to Carol” takes a valiant stab at mariachimusic, and misses. “Sorry Doesn’t Help”, which sounds like a mediocre bar bandtrying to do glam, is just horrible. And the question of whether Morrissey’slashing out at critics and doubters has become pathological still looms, as ithas for the last decade.

No, Years of Refusal, though it contains several songs that could be among his best, is no classic. But it doesn’t need to be. Morrissey has earned the right to sit back andbecome his generation’s Sinatra, and most of his fans would be perfectly happywith that. Instead, with this record, he’s had a go at holding his own with theyoung whippersnappers instead. And he’s succeeded.

It doesn’t last. Soon his skull is being squeezed by invisible hands, his mama is dying, children are telling him he smells, and he’s admitting to sometimes feeling hunchbacked. His fans wouldn’t want anything less, of course, and he delivers with typical flair and wry comic timing. Inconsistency has often bedeviled Morrissey, even back in the Smiths days, and “Years of Refusal” suffers from some songs that go nowhere (and some old songs; two appeared on last year’s "Greatest Hits"). He’s developed definite studio chemistry with his band, though, and everyone sounds more charged up than ever. They land some dynamic showstoppers, like the exquisite “It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore.”

Did you know? Producer Jerry Finn died of a brain hemorrhage—at age 39—shortly after completing “Years of Refusal.” Morrissey credits Finn with giving him a new sense of confidence since working together on his big comeback, 2004’s “You Are the Quarry.”

Pop music doesn’t allow for many third bites at the apple, but here’s Stephen Patrick Morrissey’s chomping away. It’s the Dr. Dre career path: Both led epoch-defining groups, both sustained smart, healthy solo careers that collapsed with a thud in the mid-90’s, and both came roaring back to life. We look forward to a possible collabo on Detox.

Ever since You Are the Quarry in ’04, our man from Manchester has been weirdly unstoppable, making vital music, throwing exhaustingly energetic live shows, and honing in on 50 as well as or better than any rocker this side of Neil Young. Produced with you-are-there vigor by the late Jerry Finn, who helmed Quarry, Years of Refusal thunders with noise-rock bass lines, enormous drums, and big swaths of guitar distortion. Though Moz’s vocal range has narrowed with age, he still delivers brilliantly titled odes to depression (“Something Is Squeezing My Skull”) and hanging out on his own (“I’m OK By Myself” –do tell).

As a zine nerd who got onstage and changed the world, Morrissey loves reflecting on fandom and idols. “All You Need Is Me” feels aimed at his lifelong cult (“You don’t like me, but you love me / Either way you’re wrong / You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone”), while “You Were Good in Your Time” might as well be about his own bad self, always and forever a go-to topic. He’s the light that never goes out.

Years of Refusal - Four Stars

Years of Refusal: Brilliant. | News

Steven Patrick Morrissey is an alluring individual.

Whether it’s his mystique or prolific ability to rouse a crowd of men in their 40s, everything he has released has been dissected with the accuracy a vegetarian would cringe at.

So enter Years Of Refusal, Morrissey’s ninth solo album. In a word, it is brilliant. From the joyous, dare I say, optimistic-sounding lead single ‘I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris’, to the upbeat ‘Someone’s Squeezing My Skull’, the album is full of tracks that display a remarkable consistency of quality.

A pinhole portcullis into the world of one of the country’s best humans, the lyrical dexterity and poetical prowess of a man who will be 50 this year hasn’t waned or become diluted with age.

With lyrics nothing less than charming, it’s immensely enjoyable when little quips like “Pigs in grey suits”, “Uncivil servants” and “like a QC full of fake humility” find their way through.

Those who bought last year’s greatest hits collection will already be aware of two of the stronger tracks here. ‘All You Need Is Me’ and ‘That’s How People Grow Up’ both featured on said compilation, and serve as an easy way into what proves to be a very accessible record.

There is a distinct depth to proceedings as the tracks unfold, one by one. From the tender ‘You Were Good In Your Time’ to the grandstand finish of ‘I’m OK By Myself’, the material on show proves that Moz, Boz and company are still working at the top of their game, perhaps even bettering their celebrated recent form.

Diehards will rightly question how Years Of Refusal stands up to 2004’s successful You Are The Quarry album, and the answer is that it does so brilliantly. Part of this success is down to the production talents of the late Jerry Finn, who passed away last summer; many will also say that the album’s appeal is down to a seemingly happier central protagonist. Rarely has Morrissey sounded so… cheerful.

Those in the market for nostalgia may have better luck watching Carry On films to gain a taste of the forgotten, but as with anything Morrissey, there’s historically-sourced inspiration to be discovered if you explore deep enough. In terms of longevity, all of these tracks have the ability to step up and become your favourite at one time or another. While these sensations will only come with an investment of your time, it’s certainly worth it.

Whether you love or hate Morrissey, it’s hard to listen to this album and not conclude that it’s one of his best as a solo artist. The feeling of rejuvenation that You Are The Quarry featured has returned, and the sardonic wit from album eight, 2006’s Ringleader Of The Tormentors, is fused throughout the album to great effect.

Almost 25 years after The Smiths swept the country off its feet, turning everyone casually vegetarian and leading grown men to sport quiffs for any occasion, Years Of Refusal is a welcome addition to an already impressive back catalogue: from beginning to end the pace and quality doesn’t let up.

Some may argue that Years Of Refusal lacks the real standout tracks his previous two albums had, but give it a few months and people will be talking about this release with the same kind of reverence that …Quarry received.

Years of Refusal | News

Morrissey will release “Years of Refusal” in the US February 17, 2009 on Attack/Lost Highway. “Years of Refusal” will be Morrissey’s first studio album since 2006’s UK #1 “Ringleader of the Tormentors”. In February, Morrissey will begin the US leg of his world tour that includes rare intimate club dates.

The late Jerry Finn, who previously worked on 2004’s critical and commercial smash “You Are the Quarry”, produced “Years of Refusal” which is the last album he worked on. The single “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, which Morrissey debuted during his sold out 2007 world tour, will precede the album. Long time band members Boz Boorer, Jesse Tobias, Matt Walker, and Solomon Walker play on the album, which also features a contribution from Jeff Beck on the track “Black Cloud”.

Morrissey is often recognized as the most important British musician of his generation. The New York Times recently stated, ”Morrissey isn’t just any singer: he has become one of the defining rock stars of the past few decades by virtue of his grand voice, his grander songs, and his charming habit of playing with melodrama”. His influence is felt worldwide through the countless artists that cite him as their primary inspiration. “Years of Refusal” is a masterful work that finds Morrissey and the band at their best with a muscular sound and the inimitable voice and lyrics of a legend.

Fans can pre-order “Years of Refusal” and get the opportunity to buy tickets through Ticketmaster 24 hours before they go on sale to the general public. On sale for select dates begins this Friday December 19.
