NEW ALBUM SCANDALOUS DUE OUT MARCH 15th ON LOST HIGHWAY

NASHVILLE, TN – Lost Highway recording artist Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears will be hitting the road with their high-voltage brand of garage soul. The Austin, TX ensemble has announced dates for their spring tour in support of their upcoming sophomore album Scandalous, out March 15.

Scandalous was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon, who also produced the band’s celebrated 2009 debut, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is! (Lost Highway). Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is! featured a young band’s modern and gritty take on classic American funk, soul, rock and blues. The album garnered positive feedback from the press, including Esquire, Spin, NPR, UTNE Reader, Los Angeles Times, Mojo, and Popmatters.com. On Scandalous, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears elevate their game to another level with 11 new songs that offer more diverse and contemporary stylings than its predecessor. Gospel punk burner "You Been Lyin'" (featuring The Relatives) fits squarely alongside the country blues of "Messin'" and the Stax-meets-Stones soul of Solomon Burke’s "Since I Met You Baby." The raw funk creeper "She's So Scandalous" stands out as an album highlight.

Since the release of their debut, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears have played almost non-stop in the U.S. and abroad, touring with a diverse collection of artists, including Passion Pit, New York Dolls, Dave Matthews Band, Gomez and Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm. The band’s live shows have grown considerably in volume, excitement and sheer energy each time they play. Catch Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears live in your city. More dates to come.

Download the Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears iPhone app here!

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears
2011 Spring Tour

As good as they are, all crazes must come to an
end-bring on the new albums, but tone down the revival talk,
please. Make room for something else.

Then, of course, here comes Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears.
Their arrival was sudden - like the irresistible groove that
explodes from out of a Chuck Berry lick in the intro to
"Gunpowder" from the band's debut album Tell ‘Em What Your Name
Is! (Lost Highway) - and immediately welcome, despite how snugly
they fit the bitch-session paragraph above. It's because there's
something different about them, a rock n' roll sensibility that
gives their joyous, funky soul music one hell of a kick. That,
and a sense of humor that finds characters like "Cousin Randy"
wiggling into the tunes, and makes a line like, "Bitch, I love
you," both hilarious and romantic.

To read the rest of the feature, click here

He’s opened for Little Richard but his favorite
rock ‘n’ roll band is Rocket From The Tombs and he loved Star Trek
right up to the point J.J. Abrams got hold of it. He speaks now from
a parking lot in Tennessee. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

What was the number one pawned item you saw when you worked at the
pawn shop?
Black Joe Lewis (vocals): Probably guns or tools. It was an
interesting job. I kinda walked out on my boss at the one that I
worked at most of the time. He was—do you watch The Simpsons? The
guy who made up the Simpsons characters saw him and made up the comic
book store character.

You worked for the actual Comic Book Guy?
I swear to God, dude. Red pony tail, bald on top, beard—his butt
crack always stuck out. He was a total asshole but he wasn’t a comic
book nerd—he was a gun freak. He was like in his forties and he lived
with his parents still because he was in debt because he had so many
guns. I was like, ‘How many guns do you have?’ ‘Last time I checked,
over 80.’

Did he have a special gun that he was uncomfortably in love with?
Yeah—he had this old Smith and Wesson revolver. Like a fucking Old
Western six shooter. And he did this thing every weekend where he
dressed up—like a Renaissance fair—dressed up like Civil War and
cowboy characters and they’d go and show off their shooting skills.
He was a fucking dork—such an asshole. We hated each other. It was
just me and him and we worked there all day long together. It was at
the same time as the first Bush and Gore election was going on. I was
like 18 and it was the first time I was going to be able to vote. And
he was a hardcore Republican and I wasn’t and we’d sit there and argue
all fucking day. We just didn’t like each other—he was so conservative,
man. He would sit there and argue about every little thing—like race,
politics, everything. He was a dick.

To read the rest of the Q&A, click here

Add a gospel-inspired
call and response, crisp, soul-soaked staccato brass, and song
titles such as “Big Booty Woman” and “Master Sold My Baby” that won’t
win him guest slots on any upcoming Oprah shows. The resulting
sweat-soaked sound is edgy enough though to win over predominantly
youthful white audiences unfamiliar with the likes of Lewis’ show
stopping predecessors such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave or Wilson
Pickett.

To read the rest of the feature, click here

Abrams' 'Star Trek' is garage soul sensation Black Joe Lewis.
Lewis, who grew up in Round Rock, is the front man for swinging '70s
Stax throwbacks Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. The band has
garnered rave reviews from the New York Post and the Los Angeles Times
and a write-up in the April issue of Spin. Lewis and his band, though
usually clad in suits, have played several shows in classic 'Star Trek'
uniforms.

Lewis, a longtime fan of the franchise, spent his childhood watching
episodes of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' with his father. The series
combined his interest in large military organizations — young Black Joe
Lewis was also a 'GI Joe' devotee — with his fondness for science fiction
and space travel.

By ANDREW DANSBY

Three weeks ago Joe Lewis got fired from his job shucking oysters at
an Austin restaurant. It was curious work for a man who plays guitar.

“I’ve stabbed myself in the hand a couple of times in that place,”
says Lewis. “But that’s the goal, to try to not have to do that (stuff)
anymore. I guess I’m going in the right direction.”

Lewis’ vocational fortunes have changed because his band, Black Joe
Lewis and the Honeybears, has become the most exciting live band on
the road today. They play a gritty, funky style of old soul that
sounds authentically soulful after more than two decades of pristine
R&B.

Authenticity is a finicky word to use in describing music. It can be
difficult to discern where singing ends and acting begins, especially
when the narrator is as humorous as Lewis can be. But there’s
something earthy and real about Lewis’ tale. He started as a kid from
Round Rock who wasn’t interested in his father’s soul records. His
first album was MC Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ’Em, though Lewis
says his mother wouldn’t let him get a Hammer haircut. He didn’t really
start paying attention to music till after high school. Now, at 27,
he’s a Next Big Thing who courts old-soul fans and indie-rock
enthusiasts.

Lewis’ stage name is worth noting because he embraces a certain
blackness lost in soul music. As the genre was pulled from the South
into New York, the snarling sorts of rural singers with one foot in the
church and one in the nightclub — Wilson Pickett, James Brown, James
Carr, Joe Tex, Otis Redding, Jimmy Hughes, the list goes on — were
replaced by homogenous New Jack practitioners virtually
indistinguishable from one another.

To read the rest of the feature, click here

Seafood delivery is better than most of the crap jobs he's had, beginning with a stint at the pawnshop where he picked up his first guitar. "If I didn't have this band," Lewis says, "I'd probably be in jail."

As he surveys the scene at local dive Hole in the Wall, Lewis, 27, seems more reserved than might be expected of the performer who got his start here, hootin' and hollerin' his way through playfully profane dirty-blues romps like "Bitch, I Love You" and "Big Booty Woman." Lewis figures his onstage antics -- leaping off drum risers David Lee Roth style or wailing on his knees like Jimi Hendrix -- were the only reasons clubs asked him back. "I sucked so bad," he says. "I'm a fan of raw music -- just plug your shit in, turn it up, and play."

For the rest of the feature click here
