In these still-perilous economic times, it would be hard to think of a better value for your hardearned entertainment dollar than Saturday night’s Jason Isbell/Hayes Carll double bill at the Brighton Music Hall. That sentiment was shared by enough folks to leave no tickets available at the door.

Isbell and Carll have been co-headlining and swapping the closer’s slot on recent dates together. sbell drew the earlier time Saturday evening, and he and his band the 400 Unit made good use of their allotted hour, playing a set that combined new material with what he’s left behind.

His new record, “Here We Rest,’’ continues his move toward a more acoustic and countrified sound than the Southern rock-and-soul amalgam of the band from which he amicably departed four years ago, the Drive-By Truckers. Live, however, Isbell and company gave tougher takes to “Go It Alone,’’ “Alabama Pines,’’ and the other new songs he played. That was mitigated — but only a little — by swapping out electric bass and keys for bass fiddle and accordion to pull in the rueful, aching lope at the center of one of the new album’s best songs, “Codeine.’’

No adjustments were necessary for his look back to his Drive-By Truckers material, though — back-to-back, blistering renditions of “Never Gonna Change’’ (which came with an interpolation of Hendrix’s “Stone Free’’) and “[Expletive]Lonely Love,’’ later followed by what might be his most enduring contribution to the Truckers’ catalog, “Outfit.’’ That there were plenty of Isbell fans in the house was evident from the cheers of recognition that erupted during his set and the number of mouths opening to sing along. But at the end of the night, it was a Hayes Carll crowd. Carll took advantage of the closer’s extended time to play for two hours, including all but one of the 12 songs from his just-released “KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories).’’ That provided a perfect demonstration of the ground he covers: high-test honky tonk (“Hard Out Here’’), Haggard-esque sounds and sentiments (“Bottle in My Hand’’), rock ’n’ roll racket (“Stomp and Holler’’), and delicate, gospel-flecked folk (“Hide Me’’).

There was plenty of time, too, for Carll’s deadpan asides and amplifications, whether he was apologizing for the potential blasphemy of playing “She Left Me for Jesus’’ during Easter (while pointing out that the trouble with irony is that not everyone gets it), or suggesting that his hilarious character-sketch duet “Another Like You’’ responds to the divisiveness of the contemporary political climate by focusing on what unites us —“physical attraction and alcohol.’’

Those who showed up early enough got not only the one-two punch of Isbell and Carll, but a prefatory treat: the yee-haw stomp of duo Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, who perform as Shovels & Rope.

Hayes Carll
With Shovels and Rope. $13. April 17. 7 p.m. Stage Door Theater. www.blumenthalarts.org
Though people are still slowly learning the name Hayes Carll, the singer-songwriter isn't new to the music business. He's been performing for the last 12 years or so and recording albums for the last 10. They say that slow and steady wins the race, so Carll must be on the right path. His fourth album, 2011's KMAG YOYO, is the first of his to register on the country charts — at No.12. His fan base is consistently growing and there's nothing else he'd rather do.
"It's always felt like it's been going at the right pace for me," Carll says by phone while on the
road traveling between Iowa and Minnesota recently. "There's times where I wish I wasn't as
broke and had more people coming out to shows, but with every record, it's been a good
progression. I probably wasn't ready for success early in my career and now it makes everything feel earned."
Before music, Carll had a string of odd jobs, from the typical waiter and bartending positions to census taker, vacuum cleaner salesman and medical test patient, acting out various diseases to help medical students learn better bedside manners.
"More than anything, they were character builders," Carll says. "They were good for stories —
like most good stories, they weren't a lot of fun when they were happening, but down the road
you look back and laugh about the times you had. It makes me appreciate more that I'm able to do this full time."
Carll's music finds itself in an Americana category that infuses a little of everything — rock,
rockabilly, folk and country. His newest album is the first he recorded with his band, enabling
him to write more with the music than to try and find music to fit his words.
He's found heavy influence from Dylan and sees himself more as a writer than a musician. His latest album mixes the personal style of writing that he's become known for with smatterings of current events.
"Most of my stuff in the past has been pretty directly tied up in my own issues, hang-ups and
quirks," Carll says. "On this one, I got out of the box a little bit more and wrote more about what
I've been seeing traveling around the last few years. It was kind of hard to avoid the state of the
economy or the wars or political discourse. I tried not to be too heavy-handed about it, but I felt
like I was drawn to writing about that more on this record."
Carll says he didn't have hesitations about getting political on the album, but didn't want to
"berate anybody or force them to think anything." He says his views are constantly changing, so he pays attention to his lyrics in that he doesn't want to write something he might not himself agree with in two years. Instead, he focused on basic underlying ideas that he's comfortable sharing, knowing he'll probably believe them for the rest of his life.
"There's a great quote that says, 'I'm not out here trying to change anybody's mind, I'm out here
to ease my own,'" Carll says. "I'm not writing this to make anybody vote differently, and I'm not
sure anything I write would have that effect, regardless, but it's just writing about what I see
more than anything."
There's a lot of Dylan influence on the new album, and the title track — military slang for "Kiss
My Ass Guys, You're On Your Own" — is often compared to "Subterranean Homesick Blues,"
though that's not what Carll was aiming for.
"On Stomp and Holler, I was chasing a Dylan thing," he says. "On the last record, I wrote an
outright plagiarism of him in general on 'A Lover Like You.' I readily admit that I'm influenced
by and occasionally borrow from him. On that track though, I was thinking more about Chuck
Berry than Bob Dylan."
For his next album, Carll isn't sure if he'll stick with the band or strip things down to the way it
used to be.
"That's one of the ideas that I'm thinking about is a stripped-down, more mellow singersongwriter album," he says. "That's what I did for a long time live and what I still do a lot. It was the first thing that I thought that I was good at. I enjoy and love what we're doing right now, but there's a part of me that wants to get back to just me and a guitar. I think that record's somewhere down the line, I just don't know if it's the next one or further off."

The sun hasn't risen, and neither has the drummer, so we wait in the car listening to the radio. I contemplate drafting a "no predawn shows" clause in my rider and then decide against it. When we arrive the hotel is packed with more than 500 early risers, many of them hitting the lobby bar. Daylight saving time has thrown everything out of whack.

8am: I start off the set with a song about a three-way because, well, what else do you play in a hotel lobby this early in the morning? Children were evacuated by the second song. I didn't read the part about it being an all-ages show, and by the time I notice the strollers, it's too late. Everyone is nice, and I get to look at some great Daniel Johnston artwork in the lobby.

3pm: Head to the Swan Dive for the Billy Reid/K-Swiss/American Songwriter party. I walk in the door, and someone gives me free shoes! Hell yes! I've never really gotten musician perks before, but things are looking up. As if that wasn't enough, there's an open bar for the performers. They've kept their career options open, and it annoys me. I don't feel good. I've had no food since my morning bagel, and I feel hungover before the sun has set. Lots of people talk to me, but I'm not sure I trust any of them to help me escape. I wander onto Sixth Street in search of food. Like a tourist at Mardi Gras, I'm steered into a bar where all the waitresses wear bikinis. It's called Bikinis. I'm uncomfortably aware that I'm in the coolest city in the world during the biggest event of the year where most every musical hero I've ever had is within a mile radius, and I'm at a knockoff Hooters. How did I get here?

6:30pm: Bar manager is a fan and comps the meal. I feel better about Bikinis. Not only is Carll supremely talented, he is –– to put it mildly — flippin’ hot, with his shaggy brown hair, scruffy beard, and piercing blue bedroom eyes. In the last week of February, Carll, who’s backed by two Fort Worth guys, drummer Kenny Smith and guitarist Scott Davis, was scheduled to perform at five North Texas venues of various sizes.

As a huge Hayes Carll fan, I wanted to go to all five. But I didn’t necessarily want to spend my entire paycheck on tickets and booze. (Yeah, I guess I could have gone and not had any drinks, but how likely is that?) I put on my cutest face and asked associate editor Anthony Mariani if he could use his influence to get me in the doors for free. And maybe float me a couple of cocktails on the company tab. He said maybe but only if I reported back to him. He also may have said something about “color and characters,” but I can’t be sure. I was too busy fantasizing about Hayes stripping down to his birthday suit while singing to me.
The good news, for Anthony, is that as amother of two young girls, a devoted wife, and, let’s face it, someone who’s 15 years past her partying prime, I realistically wasn’t going to stay out very late or get blotto. Seriously, to catch all of Carll’s shows, I would have had to hit The Double Wide in Dallas on Tuesday, The Aardvark on Wednesday, Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton on Thursday, Lola’s Saloon on Friday, and, finally, Poor David’s Pub in Big D on Saturday. Talk about draining. And expensive. As it turned out, I hit two of the five shows, and that proved to be more than enough.

At the Weekly, we put the paper to bed late on Tuesdays, so getting to that night’s show was nearly impossible. But on Wednesday, I duly got all dolled up and headed out with my little sister, the person who had turned me on to Carll. (Normally, I don’t enjoy country music recorded after 1979, but I had instantly fallen in love with Carll’s music one Saturday afternoon when my sister made me listen to “Beaumont” from his third album, Trouble in Mind. And I’ve been hooked ever since. Every one of his songs packs an abundance of imagery, and the emotion that he puts into his smooth voice (kissed ever so slightly by a little Texan twang) is downright captivating, occasionally chill-inducing. With the exception of a couple of songs on Carll’s most recent album, KMAG YOYO, he writes all of his material.)

We got to the ’vark a little before 10 p.m. The place was comfortably crowded, and the night’s openers, Shovels and Rope, were doing their alt-Americana thing onstage. It was pretty hot inside, so we decide to go out on the front patio for some fresh air and for my sister to suck down a cig. But when a very wasted guy got booted from the club, he stumbled and muttered in our direction, slurring something about a cigarette. We were afraid he was going to puke on us, so we went back inside.

Just in time, Carll and the guys — Davis, Smith, and Keanu Reeves lookalike Ray Jackson, Carll’s new bass player — took the stage. Hayes opened with a request, “I Got a Gig,” an old song that kind of set the tone for the rest of the evening. Though the show was supposed to be a celebration of KMAG YOYO, Carll performed a lot of old favorites. Which isn’t saying his new stuff wasn’t played or didn’t go over well — it was, and it did. The crowd seemed to especially dig the ballad “Chances Are.” Carll also sang a new never-released song, “One Bed, Two Girls, and Three Bottles of Wine,” which made me want to arrive at the next show with three bottles of wine. Sadly, we couldn’t stay for the entire show — we split around 1 a.m.

Just as well. Thursday morning reminded me why I’d sworn off whiskey a decade ago. My hangover from the Aardvark had finally subsided by the time Carll’s Friday gig at Lola’s came around. I told myself I was going to stick to beer Friday night. That didn’t happen. And Carll’s partially to blame.

My sister and I were frantic we were going to miss the start of the show because of delays getting out of the house. Plus, by the time we got to the West 7th Street corridor, parking was a bitch. We finally found a spot about five blocks away. But we arrived on time — right on time. On our rush down the street to Lola’s — in high heels, mind you — we passed an occupied white van. “Wait a second,” I said, and we backtracked a few steps. Lo and behold, sitting inside were guitarist Davis and the man of the hour himself, Hayes Carll. Of course, my sister and I forced an introduction, and when Carll said he recalled me from the audience at The Aardvark, I nearly passed out. But I kept my wits together enough to tell him that I had a blast at the gig and that I hadn’t had whiskey in nearly 15 years. His response? “Wanna swig?” I then noticed that he was holding a large bottle of Crown Royal. “Hell, yes!” I said and took a huge swallow, praying that it wouldn’t come back up. Thankfully, it did not. (That bottle would sit at Carll’s feet — and its contents would shrink — throughout the performance.) My feet barely touched the ground as Carll walked us into Lola’s and introduced us to the rest of his entourage before taking the stage.

After meeting everyone, my sister and I hit the bar. Breaking my rule but not really wanting to stick to whiskey, we proceeded to drink Purple Panty Droppers, Lemon Drops, and imported beer. Lola’s was packed, and age range was pretty expansive. Guys and girls as young as 21 and folks as old as about 80 were there. (I heard that at one point the front bar had run out of beer.) Carll and his crew closed down the joint. Afterward, he sat around and signed autographs, chatted with fans, posed for photos, and was just a swell superstar all around. To which I can only say, “It’s a shame we ain’t lovers / It could have been something / So big and grand.” Yes, even a devoted wife and mom can dream.
— Andrea McDaniel-Brentz

As usual, the affable Texan fills his songs with hard-bitten characters looking for relief from their dour days. KMAG YOYO begins with a couple working-class anthems (“Stomp and Holler” and “Hard Out Here”). On the former, Carll grumbles over a squalling guitar lick: “Most folks earn what they get for a livin’, others just steal what they need.” On the latter, he twists his misery into a honky-tonk shuffle, too tired to complain about the inequity of it all.

Still, nothing can spoil his smart-aleck nature. This is, after all, the man who released “She Left Me for Jesus,” a risque, sacrilegious hoot that became his biggest hit in 2008. The song sprung from a career peak, Trouble in Mind, where Carll wrapped his twisted sense of humor around a favorite subject—the splintered lives of sad-sack loners. Three years have passed since that breakthrough, and his wit and clever wordplay haven’t suffered during the hiatus. The mood slips from laconic to lonesome on “The Letter” (“I meet some wild people out here, those who are pretendin’ and others more sincere”), with Carll just one bad gig from going off the deep end.

His tender sarcasm is a nice touch. KMAG YOYO becomes Carll’s chance to face an old nemesis—his younger self—and learn from the missteps of his past. He’s emerged with a lighter step and stirs up some warm spirit on “Grateful for Christmas,” a wry recollection of his family’s holiday traditions. His music puts forth a fair amount of bluster, steeped in wanderlust or whiskey, or both at once. “Well, I followed my feet all across this land/A tune in my heart and a bottle in my hand,” goes one opening couplet from his fourth album, the title of which features an acronym of unprintable military slang. Those lines come from “Bottle in My Hand,” a bluegrass number with guest vocals by Mr. Carll’s fellow troubadours Todd Snider and Corb Lund. And as often happens in Mr. Carll’s songs, he’s not heading in the direction you might expect.

Gimlet eyed and smart mouthed, with a self-deprecating kind of swagger, he has positioned himself as an heir to outlaw-country royalty like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and especially Ray Wylie Hubbard, with whom he has written songs andoccasionally performed. The gentlest hangdog entreaty here is “Chances Are,” which could pass for a vintage ballad by Mr. Nelson. The most puckish is “Another Like You,” a bickering his-and-hers special (with Cary Ann Hearst holding her own) that recalls the subversively droll songwriting of Shel Silverstein.

What makes Mr. Carll something other than a torchbearer is the frank timeliness of his lyrics, which draw few distinctions between the personal and the political. He’s a sucker for a tart turn of phrase — his 2008 album, “Trouble in Mind” (Lost Highway), included a tune called “She Left Me for Jesus,” — but he doesn’t let humor get in the way of narrative momentum. The title track pulls off the Dylanesque trick of lacing a comic yarn with bitter subtext.

And there are at least a few songs here that suggest the rueful side of unruliness, as the hard-drinking guitar slinger indulges in a moment of reflection. Along those lines it hardly escapes notice that on an album redolent of aggressive honky-tonk “Bottle in My Hand” takes such a liltingly acoustic path. (Brad Jones, the album’s producer, switches from piano to upright bass.) The lyrics allude to “trouble at the border and a far-off war/Oil in the water and the shut-down store,” before eventually arriving at a pointed conclusion: “Never had a home. Just lucky, I guess.” NATE CHINEN
