Any band worth its salt that stays together for at least six
months will evolve into a different, and perhaps even better,
band than it was to start with. The Jayhawks surely did. And
few but the 2000 fortunate individuals who snagged a copy of
their 1986 debut LP appreciated just how much. Now that Lost
Highway is re-releasing that self-titled album—sometimes
called The Bunkhouse Album as a nod to the indie label their
then-manager Charlie Pine launched to release it–for the first
time on CD, the contents of the time capsule are accessible to
all.

Jayhawks founder Olson recalls Bunkhouse debut

Elvis Presley had Colonel Tom Parker, The Beatles had Brian
Epstein and The Jayhawks had Charlie Pine.

Even some longtime Jayhawks fans might not know much about Pine,
who was the alt-country band’s manager during its early days.
Like Parker and Epstein did for Presley and the Fab Four,
respectively, Pine played a key role in helping his act build
toward a long recording career. For The Jayhawks, the foundation
was the Minneapolis band’s Pine-produced, self-titled debut
album, released in 1986 on Bunkhouse Records.

Only 2,000 vinyl copies of “The Jayhawks” (a.k.a. The Bunkhouse
Album) were originally pressed. But on May 18, Lost Highway will
release the album on CD for the first time ever, and the CD
version will include a booklet with photos of the band from that
era as well as a new essay by Jayhawks founder Mark Olson.

After decades of fans asking about the long-lost debut, the
album -- officially titled "The Jayhawks" -- will be reissued
Tuesday, on CD and digitally, too.

As he picked through the reel-to-reel tapes of the Jayhawks' first
recording, Gary Louris sounded somewhat embarrassed the other day
that the 1986 album is only now seeing the light of day again.

"It made a lot of money for people on eBay over the years -- but
not for us," the Jayhawks co-leader quipped. "We probably
should've done this sooner, and tried to."

The record in question is known to fans as "The Bunkhouse Album,"
made at Control Sound Studio in south Minneapolis for Bunkhouse
Records, a small label run by then-manager Charlie Pine. Only
2,000 copies were pressed on vinyl, and, Louris said, "I think
Charlie kept a few boxes for himself."

For the first time on CD, the self-titled debut album from the highly-acclaimed, alt-country pioneers The Jayhawks was released on May 18^th by Lost Highway. The Jayhawks (often referred to by fans as The Bunkhouse album) was originally released in 1986 on Bunkhouse Records, with a pressing of only 2000 vinyl copies. Fans not fortunate enough to own a copy of The Jayhawks will be happy to know that it is finally available on CD, and again on vinyl for the first time in nearly 25 years.

The Jayhawks reissue includes an eight-page booklet with new photos from the recording period and a new essay by Jayhawks co-founder Mark Olson about album producer and then band manager Charlie Pine. The tracks are the original thirteen songs that appeared on the album, including “Falling Star”, which recently resurfaced on Music From The North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology (American Recordings/Legacy Recordings) in 2009.

The 1986 incarnation of The Jayhawks featured Mark Olson (vocals/guitar), Gary Louris (lead guitar/vocals), Marc Perlman (bass) and Norm Rogers (drums). After listening to The Jayhawks, it is clear why the band became a catalyst in the evolution of what would eventually be coined alt-country. The album has more in common with Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers than it does with later Jayhawks classics Tomorrow The Green Grass and Hollywood Town Hall. It’s quite evident where those milestone albums grew out of.
