Great Barrington Preview + Interview: Mary Gauthier | News

As improbable as it might seem, the 30-something woman toiling over an open flame in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant may be able to quote Kant and could very well turn out to be a songwriter who receives a benediction from none other than Bob Dylan.

Take Mary Gauthier (pronounced Go-shay—she’s from Baton Rouge): Although her pre-songwriting days were mired in misadventure, drugs, and alcohol, the first act of Gauthier’s story nevertheless includes remarkable accomplishments, including five years studying philosophy at LSU and subsequently starting the successful Boston eatery Dixie Kitchen.

No songs, however, until sobriety at 35. But once pen hit paper, the rubber hit the road, and Gauthier has been traveling and writing songs ever since. Her clear-eyed focus of her passions has produced five acclaimed CDs of razor-sharp, intense, and sometimes funny material, not to mention a shout-out from His Bob-ness.

The endless ribbon of highway has brought her to the Rosendale Cafe before. Owner Mark Morganstern, an early supporter, says, "Sometimes a songwriter splits open your chest and does something memorable to your heart—that’s Mary Gauthier."

I caught up with Gauthier recently to talk about songs, God, and food. In support of Between Daylight and Dark, her latest effort, she returns to the Rosendale Cafe with Diana Jones on June 6, at 8pm. On June 14 at 9pm, Gauthier performs solo at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington. www.rosendalecafe.com; www.clubhelsinkiweb.com.

Your song "Mercy Now" made a real tough-nut friend of mine who’d just become a dad pull off to the side of the road and cry.
That’s my job.

There’s a real spiritual yearning in your material. Do you feel like the venue of the singer/songwriter in a secular culture is to find language to address spiritual concerns?
Yeah, but I don’t think of it in those big terms. I think of it as: My job is to help people see God. That’s the job of every artist, whatever the medium.

Your new song "Can’t Find The Way" sounds like an acceptance that we all are lost in some way. Do you think that we’re all perpetually looking for something and we need to find a way to bear questions rather than settle on answers?
That particular song is coming from the Carter Family tradition of "This World Is Not My Home" and Woody Guthrie’s "I Ain’t Got No Home in This World Anymore." I think this is the third song of that trilogy, if I may be so bold. That’s what I’m aiming for: to be the voice of that sentiment for our time. We’re all just passing through.

There’s a lot of recitation in your songs. Has that always been a part of what you do?
Yeah, and I don’t know where that comes from. Maybe the Hank Williams/Luke The Drifter records from back when I was a kid in Baton Rouge. Some songs were meant to be sung and some were meant to be told.

Loss plays a big role in your material. Do you think as a culture we’re in need of more ways to express loss?

I’m never comfortable making big statements like that, because I don’t really honestly know. My job is to move really fast through time and space. I’m movin’, movin’, movin’ and writing, writing, writing. I don’t watch TV and I don’t spend a lot of time plugged into the culture. I’m more working at a folksinger level on the ground. So I don’t know the big answers. I don’t even see the big picture. I’m more likely to know what’s goin’ on at the airport.

I know personally when I write about loss it strikes a nerve in people and it resonates. They need it. They need someone to give them the words.

Singer-songwriter-producer Joe Henry [Solomon Burke, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann] produced Between Daylight and Dark and, in contrast to your last release, it’s mostly live in the studio. Was that his idea?
Yes. I just came in with the songs. It’s how he gets his best records—get the best band possible and just sing with the band. I like it a lot. It goes fast.

You did it in a week, right?
Yeah. I don’t like spending a month in the studio. It’s a false environment. I get real antsy. I wanna get goin’. I don’t like sittin’ in there trying to get everything perfect. I don’t care if it’s perfect. I just wanna get it down, have it be real, and Joe’s real good at that.

Do you ever miss being a restaurateur?
Not for one second, ever. [Laughs.]

How is creating a song akin to creating a dish? Are there similarities?
Very much so. The most important ingredient in both of `em is love.

Knoxville Preview: Mary Gauthier | News

Louisiana native Mary Gauthier says she struggled to write an album of songs about the devastation of New Orleans.

Mary Gauthier didn't begin writing songs until she was 35. In the 13 years since, she has become one of the masters of the craft. Peers regularly praise her work. Most recently, Bob Dylan lovingly recited the lyrics to her song "I Drink" on his radio show before playing Gauthier's recording for his audience.

But Gauthier (pronounced Go-Shay) says writing songs has never been easy for her.

"I feel like it's always I'm working in the dark and trying to find some spark somewhere," says Gauthier in a call from her home in Nashville. "It's always extremely effort-full for me. I know all these songwriters and songs just drop into their guitars out of the sky. I wish I could have just one of those songs!"

It's a surprising statement considering Gauthier creates songs that seems to flow so naturally. Some seem like journal entries. Others, including a Thanksgiving tale of a family visiting a loved one in prison, sound so personal and detailed that you can't help but believe Gauthier is recounting her own life. One of the most powerful works on Gauthier's new album, "Between Daylight and Dark," is "Can't Find the Way," a song about a person wandering the ruins of Hurricane Katrina.

"I had to write five songs to get to that one," says Gauthier.

She says she had originally intended to write an album's worth of songs about the collapse of New Orleans. However, she could never quite get it right until "Can't Find a Way" came out. She says she was inspired by a man she read about in a newspaper report.

"He was interviewed and said 'Isn't it sad when you want to go home and can't find the way?' This old boy was just walking around in circles. I thought that was just so powerful, and I just elaborated on his sentiment."

She says it's a technique she learned from listening to Woody Guthrie's songs.

"Just tell the story first-person - from one man or woman's experience," says Gauthier. "You can't tell the whole story. You don't know the whole story."

Gauthier's own story begins in Thibodaux, La. Throughout her teenage years, Gauthier was in trouble. She spent her 18th birthday in jail and was a regular resident in drug rehab programs. Later, she moved to Boston and attended the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts before opening a restaurant called the Dixie Kitchen. While she won local praise for her culinary skills, her talent for songwriting began to take hold. In 1997, she released her first album, "Dixie Kitchen," and followed two years later with "Drag Queens and Limousines," which earned her a national following. Each subsequent release has gained Gauthier more fans and greater fame.

Gauthier says there are two types of songwriters, and she knows which camp she wants to fall into.

"They're not writing 'Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.' There's mystery. There's God in there, too. There's that universal truth where everybody goes, 'Yeah, me, too.' It's different from throwing a softball at a bar full of people who are drinking. There are some writers who write to try to have themselves and other people see God. And there are people who write to push a decimal point to the right. It's two different gigs."

Gauthier says she never knows if she's been successful with a song until she looks into the eyes of her audiences. What she has noticed is that no matter if she's playing in Dublin, Berlin, Rome or Austin, Texas, people respond the same to a good song.

"We're sold a bill of goods that people are different," says Gauthier. "People everywhere are alike."

Asheville Preview: Mary Gauthier | News

"Without perspiration," says singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier, "you just end up with goo."

Gauthier (pronounced "go-shay") is talking about writing lyrics, a process she has been known to agonize over. The Louisiana native, who is now based in Nashville, rewrites songs almost compulsively, reworking them as many times as she has to until she feels that every word is set into the verses exactly right. Gauthier will typically rewrite a song 50 times, but in certain cases has written more than 300 versions until deciding that it’s finished.

"Inspiration," she offers, "is 10 percent. Perspiration is 90 percent." She says she feels "like a boat without a rudder" and "doesn’t know what she’s doing" when she is first receiving inspiration. The rest is all blood and sweat.

"Inspiration doesn’t write a song; it’s work that writes a song," she insists bluntly, before laughing. "There are other people who write exactly the opposite—and I hate ‘em! Songs don’t shoot down from the sky and they’re done. For me, it’s really effortful."

And that means that Gauthier will, on occasion, literally curl up clenched in a fetal position.

"When you know that there’s a way of saying something that’s perfect and you can’t get it. But you just know that it’s there. I just starting begging," she says. "Whimpering! Like a dog for a bone. Just ‘Please, please!’ I really, really struggle with getting it exactly right. And I think that’s why I have a career. I don’t have a career because of my looks or my singing—or certainly not my guitar chops."

Even throughout a tumultuous (and well-documented) personal history that includes several stints in jail and detox centers recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, Gauthier has always had an achievement-oriented and impressive work ethic. Naturally suited for multitasking, she says that alcoholism didn’t interfere with her ability to function as chef and restaurateur.

Music, however, which Gauthier hadn’t even ventured to try until her 40s, is a different story entirely. And, in spite of her ease with grueling work, the simultaneous struggle of maintaining sobriety while opening up to her creative muse (three years after getting sober) challenged her in ways she’d never experienced.

"With writing," she explains, "I needed to come from a different place, a channel that was closed to me. My channel was closed when I was drinking. I didn’t have enough self-confidence or self-worth or discipline. The restaurant came easy to me. I could do that in my sleep. To do this well, it takes everything I have sober."

Coming to town with her fifth album in tow, the Joe Henry-produced Between Daylight and Dark (Lost Highway, 2007), Gauthier continues to mine her past for narratives that fall in that irresistibly haunted landscape verging on country, Americana, roots and folk all at once—not unlike, say, a fresh take on Lucinda Williams’ now-classic Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Gauthier considers herself a folk artist more than anything else, and listeners may be surprised to find that, unlike her lyric writing, she takes a spontaneous approach to recording. She rehearses her backing musicians on the spot in the studio and keeps the number of takes to a minimum, which gives the music a crackling, raw edge.

And, as one might expect, solitude and heartbreak permeate the material.

"If you could sustain relationships, you wouldn’t be doing this job," Gauthier says with a chuckle. "People who live like this have a difficulty in that department—just ask Willie!"

But don’t get the wrong idea. Though Gauthier says she’s hardly home enough to cling to the concept of domesticity—"I don’t even have a cactus, much less a dog"—she says her work doesn’t stem from unhappiness in her personal life.

"My music isn’t necessarily sad," she asserts. "It’s real. I think we have a misunderstanding in our way of talking about songs. When someone gives you something real, automatically people use the word ‘sad.’ Sad is when everybody dies and there was never a reason to live. I don’t do that. I just try to present the real feel, which is my experience. It’s always ambivalence. There’s good and there’s bad and it’s always coming at us at the same time."

[Saby Reyes-Kulkarni is a freelance writer based in Rochester, N.Y.]

We couldn't have said it any better... from Amazon's Editorial Reviews:

In an era when too many youthful singer-songwriters earn critical plaudits too easily, the more mature Mary Gauthier's track record has been a heartening exception to that rule. Her difficult early life and ability to create soulful, in-your-face poetry from harsh reality, occasional brutality, and hope set her apart. If anything, she surpasses her past work with this stunning live-in-the-studio effort that captures a wide range of scenarios. There's the needy desperation of the love songs "Please" and "Before You Leave" and her brilliant conjuring of the raw displacement, rage, and grief of her fellow New Orleanians in the Hurricane Katrina-inspired "Can't Find the Way" (with a cameo from the legendary Van Dyke Parks). The atmospheric title song, penned by Gauthier and Fred Eaglesmith, teems with the angst of lost love. As the hard-hitting scenario of "Snakebit" carries the tension of classic film noir, "Thanksgiving" captures a bleak holiday prison visit. "The Last of the Hobo Kings" stands as a 21st-century requiem to the vanishing transients of the past, decades before they were renamed "homeless." Joe Henry's spare, understated production only enhances the wallop of these performances. In a world glutted with Americana singer-songwriters, many plagued by a dilettantism that prevents them from plowing too deeply into the dark side of the human condition, Gauthier reaffirms--magnificently--her ability to do that and much more.

"The Louisiana singer-songwriter's major-label debut crackles with truths lifted with a surgeon's precision from the struggles of real life. Following in the footsteps of John Prine, Gauthier exhibits a poet's unflinching eye, a counselor's compassionate heart and a trickster's wry spirit."

At 43, this folk-country-leaning Louisiana native is probably the oldest artist ever to make the Freshman Class list, but it just takes some singer-songwriters time to season — and the former owner of the Dixie Kitchen restaurant in Boston didn't even get started writing songs until she was in her 30s. This year, on her first CD for Lost Highway Records, she delivered some tunes that look at addiction and loss with such intensity they can make you wince. There's enough craft, conviction and honesty in her "Mercy Now" album to remind you of Kris Kristofferson and John Prine in their prime."
Click here to read the entire article.

Out of Love

Written by Mary Gauthier

It's a cheap hotel, the heat pipes hiss
The bathroom's down the hall, and it smells like piss
It's another night in another town
And I'm another blues traveler headed down

Falling out of love is a dangerous thing
With its slippery slopes and its weighted wings
With its birds of prey circling overhead
Casting vulture shadows on barren beds
Let me out, set me free
Let me out, set me free

The clock inside the church bell tower
Rings your name every hour
I see your face, I touch your hair
Then the ringing fades and nobody's there

Falling out of love is a treacherous thing
With its crucible kiss and its ravaged ring
With its holy whispers and labyrinth lies
Sacrilegious hungry sighs
Let me out, set me free
Let me out, set me free

I walk the streets, and I taste the dirt
I am flesh and blood, and my body hurts
I search your silence looking for a crack
For a passageway where I can pull you back

Falling out of love is a tedious thing
With its jailhouse smirk and its chain gang swing
Its time to serve and its sentence set
With its warm blood and cold sweat
Let me out, set me free
Let me out, set me free

Mercy Now

Written by Mary Gauthier

My father could use a little mercy now
The fruits of his labor
Fall and rot slowly on the ground
His work is almost over
It won't be long and he won't be around
I love my father, and he could use some mercy now

My brother could use a little mercy now
He's a stranger to freedom
He's shackled to his fears and doubts
The pain that he lives in is
Almost more than living will allow
I love my bother, and he could use some mercy now

My church and my country could use a little mercy now
As they sink into a poisoned pit
That's going to take forever to climb out
They carry the weight of the faithful
Who follow them down
I love my church and country, and they could use some mercy now

Every living thing could use a little mercy now
Only the hand of grace can end the race
Towards another mushroom cloud
People in power, well
They'll do anything to keep their crown
I love life, and life itself could use some mercy now

Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now
I know we don't deserve it
But we need it anyhow
We hang in the balance
Dangle 'tween hell and hallowed ground
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now
Every single one of us could use some mercy now

Wheel Inside The Wheel

Written by Mary Gauthier

The parade of souls is marching across the sky
Their heat and their light bathed in blue as they march by
The All Stars play "When the Saints Go Marching In"
A second line forms and they wave white hankies in the wind

Satchmo takes a solo, and he flashes his million dollar smile
Marie Laveau promenades with Oscar Wilde
Big Funky Stella twirls her little red umbrella to the beat
As the soul parade winds its way down Eternity Street

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
So, ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Mardi Gras Indians chant in the streets at sundown
Spyboy meets Spyboy, and Big Chief meets Big Chief uptown
They circle and sway in their rainbow colored feathers and beads
They prance like peacocks, children of slavery freed

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
Roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

The Krewe of the Crossbones parades into the midnight sun
They march through the fire and come out beating homemade drums
While the French Quarter Queens in their high-heeled drag disguise
Sing "Over the Rainbow" 'til Judy Garland quivers and sighs

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

Flambeau dancers light the walkway to Jean Pierre's
There's a party tonight and all the girls are gonna be there
Sipping wormwood concoctions, drinking absinthe and talking trash
It's a red carpet, black tie, all night, celestial bash

Souls ain't born, souls don't die
Soul ain't made of earth, ain't made of water, ain't made of sky
Ride the flaming circle, wind the golden reel
And roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel
I said roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel
Yeah, roll on, brother, in the wheel inside the wheel

I Drink

Written by Mary Gauthier and Crit Harmon

He'd get home at 5:30, fix his drink
And sit down in his chair
Pick a fight with mama
Complain about us kids getting in his hair
At night he'd sit alone and smoke
I'd see his frown behind his lighter's flame
Now that same frown's in my mirror
I got my daddy's blood inside my veins

Fish swim
Birds fly
Daddies yell
Mamas cry
Old men
Sit and think
I drink

Chicken TV dinner
6 minutes on defrost, 3 on high
A beer to wash it down with
Then another, a little whiskey on the side
It's not so bad alone here
It don't bother me that every night's the same
I don't need another lover
Hanging 'round, trying to make me change

Fish swim
Birds fly
Lovers leave
By and by
Old men
Sit and think
I drink

I know what I am
But I don't give a damn

Fish swim
Birds fly
Daddies yell
Mamas cry
Old men
Sit and think
I drink

Just Say She's A Rhymer

Written by Harlan Howard

When they ask about us
As friends always do
Remember the good times
Honey, we had a few
I'll never condemn you
I'll take all the blame
You got a good answer
When they speak my name

Just say she's a rhymer
And rhymers get restless
Just say that she's out there in search of a song
I know I hurt you
But I never meant to
Just say she's a rhymer
Just say she's gone

You know that I loved you
You know that I tried
You know that it hurt me
Each time that you cried
When your crying is over
And your new life begins
I won't be around much
So when you see our friends

Just say she's a rhymer
And rhymers get restless
Just say that she's out there in search of a song
I know I hurt you
But I sure never meant to
Just say she's a rhymer
Just say she's gone
Just say she's a rhymer
Just say she's gone

Prayer Without Words

Written by Mary Gauthier and Tom Damphier

Packing vagabond visions and a dream drenched hunger for a home
Swaddled in road dirt, blood stained blankets and poems
On a stormy suitcase Sunday I awakened to the scream of the birds
They held their high notes and offered prayer without words

Sinking in asphalt, speechlessness and what coulda been
Surrounded by strangers, scarred stars, stoned broken men
Riding the narcotic night 'til she swerved and smashed into the curb
Morning spilled from the wreckage and offered prayer without words

Chains on the mast pull the past, nothing lasts but nothing ever ends
I leave town, break new ground, break down, leave town again
Trapped in the circle, anchored to the weight of the world
Under shooting stars that sink the skies and offer prayer without words

Justice rides with jaundiced eyes, jaded judges bleed the broken bench
Liberty's a homicide, she been flogged to death with money's monkey wrench
Desperado apostates set fire to every holy word we've heard
Silence billows from the burning book and offers prayer without words

Surrender, that sweet cleaning girl, folds white flags in Hallelujah Square
She can't remember where she's been, one day I'm gonna join her there
Unpack my battered traveling case, hang out a sign that says "Do Not Disturb"
Dissolve into a dreamless sleep that offers prayer without words

Your Sister Cried

Written by Fred Eaglesmith

Well, I stared out of the windshield into the rain so light
And I turned on my dims, and somebody flashed me their brights
And I reached over and turned the radio way down low
Your sister cried all the way home
Lightening crashed, and the road shone like a mirror
A dog came out of the ditch, then he disappeared
And I remembered a conversation we once had on the phone
Your sister cried all the way home
I'll never know how you got into such a mess
Why do the bridesmaids all have to wear the same dress?
Everybody said you looked real good
But I think you looked stoned
Your sister cried all the way home
Your sister cried all the way home
Your sister cried all the way home
Your sister cried all the way home

Empty Spaces

Written by Mary Gauthier and Dale Keys

Silly me, what was I thinking
I coulda sworn you still loved me
But I'm a fool born to chase rainbows
I could never hold you to what you said with your eyes

You and me, hey, weren't we something?
You're holding my hand in that picture hanging in the hall
Well, I took it down after you left
Now there's an empty space on the wall

Empty spaces ain't nothing new
Rainbows ain't something that you hold on to
They move out as the storm moves through
Empty spaces ain't nothing new

Every day
I wake up and wonder
How will I make it on my own?
Silly me, what was I thinking
I was on my own all along

Empty spaces ain't nothing new
Rainbows ain't something that you hold on to
They move out as the storm moves through
Empty spaces ain't nothing new

Drop In A Bucket

Written by Mary Gauthier

Happy Anniversary, baby
It's been a year now since you moved away
Even though I asked you to go
I miss you every day
I miss you in the evenings
Alone in the bed where I lie
I miss you in the morning
Before I open my eyes

I went and sold everything that I could, babe
Then I gave away what didn't sell
I moved south to Nashville
I might like it there, but I can't tell
I been hanging in Austin
Eating Chili's and good Bar-B-Q
Writing songs about losing and heartache
Hey babe, I been writing 'bout you

A year, that ain't nothing
When you lose someone you love
A year is a drop in a bucket
When you lose someone you love

I been traveling hard since September
I won't get back to Nashville till June
I've played my songs all over the world
But I can't find a home without you
I press on like a mad rushing river
I press on with the will to survive
Part of me lives for the wind in my face
While the other part's barely alive

A year, that ain't nothing
When you lose someone you love
A year is a drop in a bucket
When you lose someone you love

So Happy Anniversary, baby
May fortune and fate be your friends
Wherever you go, I want you to know
I don't think my love ever ends
I carry it down the highway
It's a part of my body and soul
And one day it'll be the part of me
That will pull me up out of this hole

A year, that ain't nothing
When you lose someone you love
A year is a drop in a bucket
When you lose someone you love

It Ain't The Wind, It's The Rain

Written by Mary Gauthier

There's a big storm a coming
Of this I've no doubt
That storm's gonna blow your little world inside out
When the wild winds let up
When the violence wanes
You'll think of me then, when you're watching it rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain

When the rain won't stop falling
When the flood waters rise
When all that you're sure of washes out with the tide
You'll have no crazy lover there to make you look sane
You'll think of me then, when you're knee deep in rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain

When rain fills the river and dark waters spill
Over the levee and rush down the hill
They'll carry me with them
I won't have to explain
There'll be no confusion
There'll only be rain

I was born lonesome, and I'm lonesome still
Ain't nothing you done ever changed how I feel
When the storm clouds are building, when the deluge takes aim
I know what's coming, I know the rain
I see what's coming, I know the rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain
It ain't the wind, it's the rain

Tracks
1.
