"Roadhouse Sun" CD Review in June '09 issue
Ryan Bingham + The Dead Horses
Roadhouse Sun LOST HIGHWAY
Ryan Bingham is the real deal. Raised in the ranching communities around
western Texas and New Mexico, he learned his lessons riding bulls on the
rodeo circuit. Bingham is at home with folks like the Drive-Truckers
(who he’s toured with), Springsteen and Steve Earle – and his sophomore
release, Roadhouse Sun (produced by Marc Ford), moves from powerhouse
country-rock (“Day is Done”) to politically-inspired folk (“Dylan’s Hard
Rain”) to piano-fueled barrelhouse blues (“Roadhouse Blues”) to
psychedelic exploration (“Change Is”). There’s also the mandolin hoedown
(“Tell My Mother I Miss Her So”), “Bluebird” featuring a subtle keyboard
pulse and spacey steel guitar passage that winds into a slide guitar melt
down with Bingham’s vocals sounding like a young John Bell (Widespread
Panic). But what makes this combination of American roots influences so
appealing is that it never feels disjointed. Instead Bingham wraps it
all in calloused hands, his dusty characters and timeless songs brought
to life with big guitars and a gravely voice.
