LISTENING to Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears' new album, "Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!" could make you break out in a cold sweat.
The eight-piece band out of Austin, Texas, is one of those throwback soul ensembles powered by Memphis-style horns, bass funk, rhythm and lead guitars, a Wurlitzer organ and a soul shouter who can belt it out like a junior James Brown.
From a tour lunch stop at a Chicken Express outside Dallas, Joe Lewis talked about his music -- between bites. And it's a bit of a surprise that the 27-year-old singer and guitar player is about as laid-back in conversation as he is frenetic in song.
He didn't even pick up a guitar until he was about 19 or 20.
