Heartaches, disappointment, perseverance and recovery are topics that Hayes Carll brilliantly examines in his strong new CD. Besides singing about all these with depth and conviction, the stories and lyrics in such songs as "Drunken Poet's Dream," "Bad Liver And A Broken Heart," "Knockin' Over Whiskeys" and "She Left Me For Jesus" are sometimes funny, other times evocative and always striking and thoughtful.
Brad Jones ably handles the production, mixing and engineering duties, and the tight, disciplined length of the tunes (none longer than four plus minutes) prevents any excesses in musical or vocal presentation.
These are wise, sometimes painful, and consistently smart and sobering modern proverbs, done with style, grace and flair.
