With Trouble In Mind, Hayes Carll staggers back, safely, into the Americana spotlight with a healthy grin of world-weary songs and half-heartbreaking ballads. Following his self-released Little Rock won’t be easy, as it perched at the #1 spot on the Americana Music Chart for a spell. Carll’s latest effort roams truthfully from Texas to Nashville and hits every honky tonk in between.
Three albums on three different labels seems normal for Carll as he draws restlessly on the country song standards of whiskey, love and playing night after night in God knows where. What separates Carll from his young country contemporaries are his John Anderson-like playfulness and quick bursts of rock infusion with songs like “She Left Me For Jesus,” the Dylan-esque “A Lover Like You,” and the brilliantly written “Drunken Poets Dream.” Why Carll would re-release “It’s A Shame” when he is such an astute songwriter leaves the track further out of place on this album full of variety and promise. Trouble in Mind is one of those few albums Texas music fans are going to listen to again and again, and it deserves the first slot in your sun visor this spring.
